It was drier tonight so I could display my #OneADayInMay finds, and one of the first things you’ll notice is the number of cups, lids, and straws. I’ve counted these as separate pieces of litter because each piece was found separately. This shows how what appears as one piece of litter can easily turn into three with very little effort. Could new and improved packaging design help, such as a hinged lid and non-removable (and paper) straw? If we are serious about tackling litter in general and plastic pollution specifically, we need to rethink how we package products–it should no longer be about what’s cheaper or easier, but rather what will have the lowest impact.
