The calendar may say that autumn begins on 22nd September, but I think the litter just faced its first autumn storm. It was rather wet and windy here the past few days, but the rubbish continues to hang in there, mostly. A few items have a bit more mould than previously, but otherwise things are at the point where they are more or less unchanging. Most noticeable: the “biodegradeable” balloon continues not to biodegrade and the plastic items and the cigarette butts continue to look brand new.

While cigarettes are made from paper, the butts themselves are made from a type of plastic that can take up to 10 years to biodegrade. Nearly 1 trillion butts are discarded each year, which can leach into soil and water; not a pretty picture, is it?
