In talking to a passerby recently, she gave us a new term and new human behaviour to consider in the battle against litter. Ghost bins.
These are areas where there used to be bins but, for whatever reason, they have been removed. Yet people still place their rubbish there and, due to perceived norms, a pile of litter begins to form as others follow suit.
This indicates that habit plays a big role in littering behaviour. So what can we do to break bad habits and let ghost bins rest in peace?
