Every so often we hold an “unofficial” Community Clean Up, one just for existing volunteers on the mailing list. A few weeks ago a group of us turned up to tackle Donkey Field and managed to find 8 bags of general rubbish and 8 bags of recycling (34 glass bottles, 87 plastic bottles, and 163 aluminium cans). I wish I could say I was shocked by these numbers, but since 2015 we have found almost 400 bags of general rubbish and over 10,000 items of recycling. Can you imagine this multiplied across the entire country?
Or, to look at it another way, an average 330ml aluminium can measures approximately 4.5″ in height so, if placed end to end, the number of cans found in that time (5,342) would stretch for half a mile. Perhaps it’s this type of maths that should be taught in school?
A big thank you to everyone who turned out in February, and please make sure to add 6th April to your diary. We’ll be taking part in our fifth Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean from 10am until noon in Monkton Park. Stop by to say hello (and wish Jon a happy birthday!).
