Both pieces of today’s #OneADayInMay rubbish illustrate a common problem: branded litter that ends up a few minutes walk away from where it started. Both places–in this case Sainsbury’s and Subway–have bins in front of their premises. But that’s not how people behave of course; it’s called “eating on the go” for a reason!

Simply deploying more bins is not the answer, but smarter bin placement (with a programme of education and behaviour change) may help. In my past life as a researcher, ease and convenience always trumped other factors when it came to the reason why people engaged in certain behaviour. Littering is no different; shouldn’t we take the steps necessary to make it easy for people not to litter?
